Computer Use Policy

PURPOSE:

To address the use of computers, E-mail, Internet, Intranet, telephones, voicemail and FAX machines.

DEFINITION:

The computer system includes the VAX's, PC's, laptops and software used to support these systems, and the Internet and Intranet services.

E-mail is sending written messages through a system of computers.  It includes messages sent within the network, and messages sent to other individuals and organizations through the Internet.

The telephone system includes all telephones, voicemail and FAX machines.

OVERVIEW

Computers, E-mail, Internet, Intranet, telephones, voicemail and FAX machines are provided to employees to conduct employer business and are not for personal use.

POLICY

Access to computers, E-mail, Internet, Intranet, telephones, voicemail and FAX machines exist for the purpose of conducting business and are not intended for personal use.  Limited personal use is allowed, if such use meets certain guidelines.

No use of computers, E-mail, Internet, Intranet, telephones, voicemail and FAX machines shall:

·         Impair business or the employee's performance.

·         Commit an illegal act.

·         Violate the Employer’s anti-harassment policy.

·         Result in private gain or advantage for the employee.

·         Express political opinions.

Unauthorized or improper use of computers, E-mail, Internet, Intranet, telephones, voicemail or FAX machines may result in terminating access to it and/or disciplinary action, up to and including termination.

Information Systems will provide telephone and Internet use reports to departments for each user as requested.

Each employee has a unique user name and password.  Employees are responsible for all computer, Internet and Intranet use under their user name.

All electronic storage, data files, logs and programs used on ABC owned computer or telephone equipment is the property of Employer ABC and can be inspected by managers at any time.

No employee has a personal right to, or any rights of privacy to any information stored or created on the Employer’s computer or telephone systems.

An employee, acting in an official capacity may use the system to schedule meetings, announce decisions and communicate status of issues.
