Re:                  Disability Income Plan (DI Plan) - Funding of Treatments for Disabled Employees

Effective November 10, 2015 the DI Plan will consider requests for the funding of certain rehabilitative treatments and evaluations where it is determined that the duration of a disabled employee’s absence from work might be shortened as a result.

A request for funding for treatment or evaluation must be made to the Employee Benefits Department by the employee.  Employee Benefits will consider funding approvable treatments and evaluations when:

  • An employee has an existing DI claim and the claim is either active or pending review/adjudication;
  • It is determined that the duration of a disabled employee’s absence from work might reasonably be shortened as a result; and
  • It is determined that the employee does not have funding available to them for such treatment or evaluation through other means

Treatments and evaluations that the DI Plan will consider funding include:

  • Physiotherapy
  • Chiropractic Services
  • Massage
  • Counselling Services
  • Functional Abilities Evaluation (FAEs)
  • Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCEs)
  • Cognitive Testing
  • Vocational Consultant Reviews

Costs that the DI Plan will not provide funding for include:

  • Drugs, vitamins, supplements of any kind, prescription or otherwise
  • Functional or tertiary level treatment (programs that require daily, all-day attendance for an extended period)
  • Costs related to travel, meals and accommodation
  • Alternative treatments such as acupuncture, naturopathic and homeopathic therapies
  • Cosmetic treatments of any kind

Funding request will be made prior to the date that the treatment or evaluation begins. In circumstances where obtaining advance approval is not possible, requests for funding will be considered provided the request is received by the DI Plan within 30 days of the first day of the treatment or evaluation.

The DI Plan will not fund treatments or evaluations that are not attended by the employee.

It is the responsibility of the requesting employee to arrange and book the appointments for any approved treatments or evaluations.
