SUBJECT: Holidays

PURPOSE: To establish a standard policy of holidays.

POLICY: It is the policy of Employer ABC to provide employees with paid holidays.

1.     Eligibility

·         All employees employed to work at least  hours per week for at least  months, are entitled to holiday time off with pay as follows:

(1)   An employee is receives a paid day off for the day the holiday is observed if not on unpaid leave.

(2)   A new employee is entitled to holiday pay for observed holidays that occur after his/her first workday, including the initial month of employment.

·         Lump sum vacation payments for terminating employees are computed as though the employee actually worked and paid out in full on the employee’s final check.  Employees that do not terminate on either the first or last workday of the month will receive pro-rated vacation pay for the month in which he/she terminates.

2.     Holiday Schedule

·         Holidays are categorized into two (2) types: national and state holidays:

(1)   National Holidays - Labor Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr.  Day, Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, and Independence Day.

(2)   State Holidays – FILL IN YOUR STATE OR PROVINCIAL HOLIDAYS HERE

·         Employees receive a paid day off on each recognized national and state holiday if the holiday(s) does not fall on a Saturday or Sunday.  Employees receive a paid day off on Friday if the holiday falls on a Saturday.  Employees receive a paid day off on Monday if the holiday falls on a Sunday.

3.     Determination of Holiday Pay

All eligible full-time employees shall receive pay for the day the holiday is observed equal to eight (8) hours or one day at the regular straight time rate.  All eligible employees who work less than full-time shall receive pay for the day the holiday is observed on a proportionate basis.

4.     Holiday Worked

All employees who work the day a holiday is observed shall be entitled to (1) paid day off during the twelve-month period following the date the holiday was worked.  The day off will be taken as mutually agreed upon by the employee and their supervisor.  Where an employee is scheduled to work a holiday and becomes ill, he/she will use paid sick time and shall be entitled to (1) paid day off during the twelve-month period following the date of the holiday.

5.     Varying Work Schedules

Departments with work schedules other than the normal schedule will insure their employees observe the proportionately equivalent number of holidays each year.

6.     Observing Religious Holidays

Employees can observe optional holidays (Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Good Friday) in lieu of any state holiday.

7.     Voting and Holidays

Employees shall be allowed sufficient time off to vote without any deduction in pay or leave time.
