Personal Relationships

PURPOSE:

To prevent a conflict of interest, or adverse impact on supervision, productivity, or security when supervisors, managers, and co-workers engage in romantic or sexual relationships.

BACKGROUND:

Supervisors and Managers

Supervisors and managers are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that promotes ABC's organizational values.  A romantic and/or sexual relationship with a subordinate may result in favoritism or perceptions of favoritism that adversely affect ABC’s productivity and moral.  In addition, subordinates can lose the respect for the supervisor or manager.  Supervisors and managers must be held accountable for these types of relationships between employees.

Co-Workers

Romantic and/or sexual relationships between co-workers can cause friction in the workplace.

SCOPE:

Supervisors and Managers

This policy addresses romantic and/or sexual relationships between supervisors/managers and subordinates.

Co-Workers

This policy addresses romantic and/or sexual relationships between any two employees where it creates an adverse effect on productivity or security or involves a conflict of interest.

POLICY:

Supervisors and Managers

Romantic and/or sexual relationships are not allowed between a supervisor/manager and subordinates.  The Appointing Authority (e.g., Department Manager) is responsible for responding to these situations.

·         If a supervisor/manager becomes involved in a romantic or sexual relationship with a subordinate, the supervisor/manager must inform the Department Manager of this relationship.

·         If possible, the Department Manager shall transfer the manager/supervisor.  If this is not possible, other appropriate arrangements will be made.

·         One party to a relationship will not be placed under the influence of the other party to the relationship.

Co-Workers

When a romantic and/or sexual relationship between co-workers creates an adverse effect on productivity or safety, or involves a conflict of interest, the Department Manager has the right to transfer one or both parties to different work units.
