The Pharmacy Technician (Production) is responsible for producing low-cost, high-quality pharmaceutical products.

In order to carry out these responsibilities, the Pharmacy Technician complies with the defined standards of production and equipment maintenance and effectively manages the PU staff.

The Pharmacy Technician (Production) reports to the Production Pharmacist and receives verbal and written direction and instructions.

There is one position reporting to this position:

  • Pharmacy Orderlies (3): Responsibilities include cleaning, packing and participating in the production process. The Pharmacy Technician (Production) provides Pharmacy Orderlies with technical and general guidance on cleaning as well as the job requirements, expectations and duties.


Freedom to Act:

This work of this position originates from PMS. Completed work is sent to the Pharmaceutical Main Store (PMS) and is reviewed and approved by the incumbent and the Production Pharmacist.

The position encounters frequent problems related to:

  • Break down of equipment

This position does not encounter any difficult problems.

This position has access to a supervisor in order to resolve the above problem(s).


This position does not have any regular internal or external contacts outside the department.


  • Ensures the production of high-quality pharmaceutical products:
    • Allocates and supervise staff to clean specific areas in the production unit
    • Ensures that the right quantities are weighed, measured and recorded
    • Ensures that the right packaging is used
  • Ensures production equipment is properly maintained and repaired:
    • Regularly checks and reports equipment and apparatus that require repair or replacement
  • Ensures that production staff are well supervised and perform efficiently and effectively:
    • Makes weekly and daily work plans
    • Allocates staff work
    • Conducts inspections to ensure all staff comply with production regulations


This position requires the incumbent to stand and walk in the production area (the area of the production unit is about 280 square metres) on a constant daily bases during an 8.5-hour workday.

The incumbent is exposed to fumes form the volatile chemicals and organic compounds used and stored in the production unit on a constant daily bases during an 8.5-hour workday.
Mental stress is caused by a demand increase that is due to large orders that are made on short notice. Stress levels increase because staffing levels are not increases in order to account for the increased demand. This occurs once or twice a week and lasts 8.5 hours each time.
