References

Policy

Positive reference checks are a condition of employment.   will verify the candidate’s references.  The hiring supervisor will indicate that a reference check has been completed on the Staff Changes Form.

Prior to making an offer,  should contact at least enter number of the candidate’s references.  The following should be discussed during a reference check:

·         Knowledge of the position applied for and ABC.

·         Work habits.

·         Productivity history.

·         Attendance.

·         Eagerness or enthusiasm.

·         Problem-solving capability.

·         Responses to supervisors.

·         Responses to co-workers.

Only factors related to past performance should be discussed.

Certification or licensing verification should be made for positions with those requirements.

Procedure

Information obtained from references is confidential and is not shared with the candidate.  Candidates who provide false information or exclude facts will not be considered.  Candidates who provide misrepresented information or exclude facts will be terminated if this fact is made known after an employment offer is made and/or after the candidate commences employment.

HR can help supervisors conduct reference checks at any point in the process.

The hiring supervisor will list checked references on the completed Staff Changes Form.

If a supervisor does not indicate that a reference check has been completed on the Staff Changes Form, HR will require a corrected form be submitted within  working days.

Background Checks

For positions where the candidate will handle monies, securities, or confidential information, an official criminal background check will be required.  Any advertisement for such a position will indicate that a criminal background check is mandatory.
