RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Security Guard is responsible for protecting all Company ABC employees and property and providing customers who visit the Company ABC facility with the information they require. 

In order to carry out these responsibilities, the Security Guard conducts regular checks and foot patrols and verbally interacts, helps and directs customers.

ORGANIZATION STRUCTURE:

The Security Guard reports to the Security Supervisor and receives verbal and written direction and instructions.  The Security Guard also receives written and verbal direction from the Deputy General Manager.

There are no subordinates reporting to the Security Guard.

There are other positions throughout Company ABC that provide direction or guidance to the Security Guard:

  • Security Officer: Guidance on disciplinary issues and communication from top management
  • Deputy General Manager: Guidance on staff leaves and deployment issues
  • Administrative Officer: Guidance on requisitioning uniforms and stationary
  • Head of Procurement Dept: Guidance on delivering supplies after official working hours

NATURE OF WORK AND JOB SCALE:

Freedom to Act:

This work of this position originates from the Administration Department.  Completed work is sent to the Administration Department and is reviewed and approved by the Security Supervisor and the Deputy General Manager for staff appraisals.

This position has the following procedures or manuals made available to the incumbent:

  • Procedures:
    • Customer information procedure
    • Security operations procedure
  • Manuals:
    • None

Challenges:

The position encounters frequent problems related to:

  • False alarms
  • Incomplete uniforms i.e. the uniform does not include shoes and gum boots

The most difficult problems this position encounters include:

  • Staff members leaving the doors to their offices opened and not being sure whether to go in to close the doors for fear of the alarms going off.

This position has access to a supervisor in order to resolve the following problem(s):

  • Lack of adequate supplies e.g. replacement uniforms, torches and torch dry cells (this problem is taken to the security supervisor)
  • Disagreement on the job amongst the security guards (taken to the Security Supervisor)
  • Difficult customers at the gates (taken to either the Head of Procurement, Administrative Officer or Deputy General Manager or General Manager or Head of Technical Service)

This position has access to other employees in order to resolve the following problem(s):

  • Head of Procurement - Difficult customers at the gates
  • Administration - Difficult customers at the gates
  • General Manager - Difficult customers at the gates
  • Head of Technical Service - Difficult customers at the gates

Contacts:

This position has contact with the following individuals, departments and/or external contacts on the following basis:

  • Head of Procurement: to receive instructions/permission to deliver supplies after official working hours, approximately twice a year
  • Deputy General Manager: to discuss deployment and staff leave issues, approximately three times a year.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Protects Company ABC property and staff:
    • Conducts regular checks for incoming traffic
    • Checks sales documents for customers who have made purchases
    • Uses a security panic button whenever necessary
    • Conducts day and night foot patrols
    • Informs management of any security irregularities
  • Provides Company ABC customers with information and directions:
    • Verbally shows customers where to go based on their needs
    • Makes telephone contacts with the concerned personnel to determine if they are willing to receive the concerned customer or visitor

This position provides reports to the following individuals, departments and/or external contacts on the following basis:

  • General Security Report (Occurrence book) - Security Supervisor - Provides a security status of the premises at the end of each shift - Daily

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This position requires the incumbent to make foot patrols during each 12-hour workday.  Foot patrol last an average 6 hours.  The incumbent is occasionally required to open and close the barrier at the gates (barrier weighs about 150 kg).

The incumbent is exposed to mosquito bites on a 12-hour night shift.
