Temporary Positions

Temporary employees must follow formal hiring procedures.

Temporary positions are not budgeted positions.

Temporary employees can be terminated at any time without notice or severance pay.

TEMPORARY POSITIONS DEFINED

Temporary positions are not budgeted positions.  They may be full or part-time and have a fixed term of employment.  Temporary employees are generally hired for a special project or purpose.

Recruitment procedures for temporary employees may be waived with the approval of the Director of Personnel.

Procedures regarding the employment of temporary employees:

·         Temporary assignments for specific projects are not to exceed six months on a full-time basis, or twelve months on a half-time basis.  Recruitment procedures for temporary employees may be waived with the approval of the Director of Personnel.

·         The Vice President of Finance must give authorization for all temporary assignments for specific projects.

·         Letters of appointment come from Personnel.  Letters must specify the temporary nature of the assignment with continued employment subject at the discretion of Employer ABC.

·         Within the employment period (i.e.  six months or twelve months), consideration must be given to the ongoing need for the function and whether or not recruitment procedures will be put in place.

·         Search procedures shall be required for appointment from a temporary assignment to an approved permanent position unless waived by the Director of Personnel.  Temporary incumbents may apply for temporary positions.

·         Letters of re-appointment must be prepared on either a bi-annual or annual basis, as defined above.  Letters of re-appointment come from Personnel.  Letters must specify the temporary nature of the assignment with continued employment subject at the discretion of Employer ABC.

·         Dual assignments must be monitored carefully to avoid multiple part-time assignments that result in full-time work.
